First of all, tell us a bit about your business

Pow Pots are plant pots with panache! We individually hand-paint them in our Lake District studio in bold colours and striking patterns. We take inspiration from Scandinavian and mid-century design and each and every Pow Pot is 100% unique. We do small pots, big pots, indoor pots and outdoor pots. Lots of pots!

What inspired you to start?

In a past life I was a journalist in London and then Manchester. When I had my daughter I wanted to do something different. I've always loved houseplants, colour and pattern. I had a Habitat crockery habit and my flat in London was wallpapered to perfection in colourful prints. Despite being in that early motherhood fog, having a break from work during my maternity leave gave me the headspace to be properly creative once more. I was researching ideas for a modern flower shop when the idea of Pow Pots developed. It was something so different that it just took off from the start. It has been the most wonderful journey - we have just turned 7 would you believe...!

How do you incorporate sustainable practices into your business?

We have made a special effort with our packaging: we have specially-made cardboard packaging that is made from 100% recycled card and is also recyclable. We minimise non-card packaging, and what we do use is always reused or secondhand. We use gum tape which is amazing, and completely eco, and the paints themselves are eco-friendly low VOC paints. The fibreclay pots are handmade in moulds and none of our pots are kiln-baked.

What's your proudest moment?

When The Conran Shop Tokyo placed an order. Got the Champagne out for that one!

What do you love most about running your own business... and what’s most challenging?

The freedom to be the creative force, do something I genuinely love, and manage my own time and make my own decisions. The people I work with and for, and my customers are such a lovely, lovely bunch. Houseplant people really are the best. Seven years in and I still pinch myself on a regular basis that this is my life now. That said, it comes with an awful lot of admin and late nights... but I still love it!

Any top tips for other small business founders out there?

There are only so many hours in the day. Accept that you can't do everything, everything takes ten times longer than you thought it would, or if you want to do everything, you are going to have to get some paid help! Even if it's a one-off job or two days a month, it is the only way to get ahead sometimes, and really is worth taking that leap. That and coffee... :-)

Thank you for the wise words Nathalie! Have you invested in a Pow Pot yet? Christmas is the perfect time to treat someone to one from our eye-popping range so come in store to see what we've got.
